Unlocking the National Pokédex in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is the ultimate goal for trainers looking to expand their post-game adventure. Acquiring this upgraded Pokédex grants access to hundreds of additional creatures from previous generations and unlocks new areas across the Sinnoh region. Understanding the exact requirements allows players to efficiently complete their regional log without unnecessary delay.
Seeing All Sinnoh Region Pokémon
The main requirement to unlock the National Dex is seeing all 151 Pokémon listed in the regional Sinnoh Pokédex. Players do not need to catch every single creature, as simply encountering them in battle or via story events counts toward your total progress.
Most encounters happen naturally by battling every trainer along routes and inside gyms throughout your main story journey. For version-exclusive Legendaries like Dialga or Palkia, visiting Cynthia's grandmother in Celestic Town will add the missing entry to your Pokédex.
Visiting Professor Rowan in Sandgem Town
Once your Sinnoh Pokédex displays 151 seen entries, head directly to Sandgem Town. Enter Professor Rowan's laboratory to present your completed regional research for official verification.
During this visit, Professor Oak will arrive to evaluate your progress and present you with the National Pokédex upgrade. This event officially expands your registered capacity to 493 Pokémon species.
Unlocking Post-Game Features and Locations
Receiving the National Pokédex opens up significant new gameplay features across the map. Professor Oak will also grant you the Poké Radar, an essential tool designed for tracking rare wild Pokémon and shiny hunting.
Furthermore, players gain access to the Battle Zone, expanded Grand Underground encounters, and wild swarms. You can also challenge gym leaders to rematches featuring significantly stronger team rosters.
Tips for Commonly Missed Encounters
Certain Pokémon can easily be overlooked if you skip optional trainers or rush through gym challenges. For instance, Drifloon only appears outside the Valley Windworks on Fridays after clearing Team Galactic from the building.
If you missed specific gym trainers, you can find alternate encounters on side routes or by exploring Victory Road thoroughly. Checking your Pokédex numerical list regularly helps pinpoint missing numbers so you can locate their corresponding locations quickly.
